Well Drillers Map

A practical guide to water well drillers near you

If you are off a city water line—or comparing a private well to extending a main—the hard part is usually not finding a phone number. It is knowing what drives cost, what a license actually means in your state, and which questions separate a careful bid from a vague one.

How a residential water well is drilled

Site and water needs

A driller will look at access for the rig, nearby septic or contamination risks, and how much water your household or livestock needs. Depth is not chosen from a catalog; it depends on local aquifers.

Drilling and casing

The borehole is advanced, then cased and sealed so surface water cannot run down the outside of the pipe into the aquifer. Geology (sand, clay, rock) changes speed and cost.

Development, pump, and testing

After drilling, the well is developed and a pump and pressure system are sized. Water testing and permits are separate line items in many states—ask what is included.

What drives the cost

Published consumer guides often put many residential well projects in the low-to-mid thousands of dollars, with depth, geology, casing, and the pump package as the big variables. Ask local licensed drillers for written bids.

Questions to ask a well driller

  1. Are you currently licensed in this state for well drilling and/or pump installation? What is the license number so I can look it up?
  2. What depth and casing size do you expect here, and what happens if you hit unexpected rock or a dry hole?
  3. What is included in the written bid (drilling per foot, casing, grout, pump, tank, trenching, haul-away, permits, water test)?
  4. Who pulls the permit, and how long do jobs like mine usually take once scheduled?
  5. What warranty covers workmanship versus the pump manufacturer?

How to check a license

Licensing rules differ by state. Use the official lookup for the state where the work will be done. License numbers on this site appear only when they come from a public licensing record.
